1918
More than 500,000 people died in the United States and up to
50 million worldwide may have died in the 1918-1919 flu
pandemic.
An estimated 20 percent to 40 percent of the world`s population
fell ill during the worst-ever outbreak, which is thought to
have spread through troop movement in World War I.
The 1918 flu worked quickly. Sometimes a person fell sick
and died in the same day.
Unlike other flu viruses, the 1918 flu killed healthy adults.
